About Johannesburg

Other names for Johannesburg is Jozi, Joburg pronounced Joh’burg, Egoli (Gold transliterated) or Joeys and Maboneng or ‘city of lights’. Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and falls under the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Region F, the capital of Gauteng Province.

Johannesburg is the largest city and financial capital of South Africa, characterised by the mine dumps dotting the skyline.  A metropolis with many parks, gardens, churches, museums and interesting buildings.  Buildings of note are the Market Theatre, Civic Theatre, Theatre Royal, Geological Museum, Oriental Plaza, SABC Broadcasting Centre, the Geological Museum, Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Planetarium and many others.  You can shop till you drop in the many Malls in the upmarket northern suburbs; Hyde Park, Sandton City, Rivonia, as well as Fourways-, Eastgate-, and Westgate Malls.

Johannesburg Population

At the 2001 census, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality had a population of  just under 2 million residents. By 2011 there were about three and a quarter million people living in Egoli. The independent settlements might make it more as not all inhabitants are included in the census.

Johannesburg History

There is some contention as to the origin of Johannesburg and how it got its name. It was where the main ‘gold rush’ took place and where the deepest gold mine is, hence its name eGoli, which means gold.

Attractions in and around Johannesburg

Gold Reef City Theme Park, a museum in itself where you can go down a mine,  replicas of buildings of an old mining town with pleasure rides, restaurants, pubs and accommodation.
