About Port Shepstone

Port Shepstone is the administrative, educational, agricultural, and commercial centre for southern Natal and falls under the Hibiscus Coast Local Municipality and Ugu district municipality. The Mzimvubu river runs through Port Shepstone and was called Mzimkulu which means ‘big water’. Gamalakhe is the township for Port Shepstone. Gama is ‘name’ in Zulu.

Port Shepstone History

Port Shepstone was named after Sir Theophilus Shepstone (natal Government Official in the 1880s). Marble was discovered here in 1867.
