About the Battlefields Area

The Battlefields are dotted with memorials, statues and grave-sites where the skirmishes took place. The wind often sighs mournfully through the grass on the hillocks, where docile cows now chew their cud. It is so peaceful that it is difficult to imagine all the lives lost, the bitter, noisy battles with blood, guts, dead and wounded lying in all manner of grotesque positions.

On a different note – There are many comfortable hotels, bed and breakfast establishments, comfortable mountain chalets, well-appointed camping sites, guesthouses, and lodges to provide visitors a welcome place to rest after their travels and activities of the day.

Battlefield History

Many battles between the Boer,  Zulu, and English took place around here. Cetshwayo, Shaka, Potgieter, Genl. Louis Botha, and Winston Churchhill are some of the names that come up. Farms were burnt to the ground, women and children landed up in horrendous conditions in the concentration camps, horses and livestock were re-appropriated, and all the food-crops got taken by the Brits. It is a bad time in our history where brother turned against brother, fighting for different sides in the Anglo Boer Wars.  My history about the Zulu wars are a bit rusty so will be continued at a later stage when I have done the research.

Attractions in and around the Battlefield

Visit the Talana Museum near Dundee, or the war museum in Ladysmith, both have fine collections of war artefacts, and are well worth a visit.

There is a lot to see and do with many adventure companies vieing to provide balloon-rides, horse-riding, hang-gliding, 4×4-trails, off-road and mountain biking, as well as other wild and wonderful rides. Bungy and other jumping, foefie-slides, treetop adventures and so on abound, as does water-sports like canoeing, fishing, sailing, white water river rafting. The hiking opportunities are endless and it is a bird-watchers paradise. For the tamer activities; shopping, sight-seeing, and photography are tops as the landscapes, the people and the wildlife is great.

Traditional and modern Zulu Cultural experiences are on offer for the adventurous, but do be careful. Make sure someone that isn’t in your party knows where you are going. Remember your cellphone isn’t always within range.  Some of these places are remote and even barely accessible.
