The Elephant Coast stretches from St Lucia in the South to Kosi Bay just short of the Mozambique border  in the North, and across the Lebombo Mountains that forms the Swaziland border with KZN in the west. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site is considered an ‘ecotourism mecca‘. Most of this area is Reserve, Game Farms, dotted with a few towns in between.

The main towns in the Elephant Coast are  St Lucia, Mtubatuba, Mkuze, Sodwana Bay, others are Jozini, River View, and iNgwavuma. Settlements are Hluhluwe, Nhlohlela, uBombo, Malobeni, Tshongwe, Madonela, Mseleni, Mboza, Mpophomeni, Mloli, eMangusi, Mvelabusha, Ndumo, Mboyi, Manyiseni, Nkungwini, Mthonjeni, Ndabeni, Malobeni, Mbazwana, and Nkonkoni.

About the Elephant Coast

The Elephant Coast has magnificent Game Reserves; Hluhluwe iMfolozi, Mkhuze, and the Tembe Elephant Park at Ndumo, and boat rides up the edtuary at St Lucia to watch hippo, water- and other birds, crocodiles, and so on.

Scuba diving at Sodwana Bay, with deep-sea fishing, shark cage diving,  and whale watching some of the other top activities.

There are many comfortable hotels, bed and breakfast establishments, comfortable mountain chalets, well-appointed camping sites, guesthouses, and lodges to choose from. Visitors will find a welcome place to rest after their travels and activities of the day.

Elephant Coast History

The San Bushmen used to live in this area and there are many cave and rock paintings, as well as Archeological sites.

Many battles between the Boer,  Zulu, and English took place around here.

Attractions in and around the Elephant Coast

St Lucia Marine Reserve, Mkuzi Game Reserve, iMfolozi and Hluhluwe Game Reserve, Lake St Lucia, Lake Sibaya, Pongolapoort Dam.

As with most of the other ‘natural areas’ there is a lot to see and do with many adventure companies vieing to provide balloon-rides, horse-riding, off-road and mountain biking, as well as other wild and wonderful rides. Bungy and other jumps, foefie-slides, treetop adventures and so on abound, as does watersports like canoeing, fishing, sailing, river rafting, snorkeling and so on. The hiking opportunities in the Lebombo Mountains are myriad and a bird-watchers paradise. For the tamer activities; shopping, sight-seeing, and photography are tops as the landscapes, the people and the wildlife are very photogenic.
