About the Midlands

The Midlands with its rolling hills and unique country-living experience is well-known for the Comrades Marathon and Duzi Marathon events that take place here annually.

There are many charming hotels, comfortable bed and breakfast establishments, cute chalets, as well as guesthouses, guest farms, well-appointed camping sites, and lodges to provide visitors a welcome place to rest after their travels and activities of the day. Curio shops, shopping centers and community centers provide ample opportunity for shoppers to find something  you like. There are many restaurants, Coffee shops, Cafes, delicatessens and even take-away joints to find food to satisfy your palate or inclination. If you like history, you may want to visit the museums and other historical sites. The architecture of some of the older buildings may fascinate you, especially the churches, civic halls, and station buildings.

Midlands History

Like in the Drakensburg area, the San Bushmen lived here and there are many Archeological sites and caves with their rock paintings.

Many battles between the Boer,  Zulu, and English also took place around here, but mainly further North in the Battlefield Area.

Attractions in and around the Midlands

There are a number of dams, nature reserves, passes, dams, and rivers in the area; Karkloof Nature Reserve, Craigie Burn Dam, Midmar Dam, Albert Falls Dam and Nature Reserve, and the Howick Falls provides picnic facilities.

The Natal Midlands with the Midland Meander, and all its arts and crafts. There is much to see and do with many adventure companies vieing to provide balloon-rides, horse-riding, off-road and mountain biking, as well as other wild and wonderful rides. Slide across the canopy of Karkloof’s indigenous forest or paraglide off Bulwer Mountain. The hiking opportunities are endless and it is a bird-watchers paradise. For the tamer activities; shopping, sight-seeing, and photography are tops as the landscapes, the people and the wildlife are fabulously photogenic.

Wartburg to Hermansburg is imbued with a unique German legacy. The Boston-Bulwer Beat is on the R617 between Howick and Underberg. A charming day-trip is The Sakabula Circuit that encompasses the rural villages of  Byrne and Richmond.
