Pietersburg is now known as Polokwane.  The closest city is Witbank or Emalahleni, with Pretoria or Tshwane a bit further and Johannesburg further still.  OPther towns and settlements in the vicinity are; Potgietersrus that has become Mokopane, Rietkolk, Mankweng, Leshwane, Sebayeng, Olyfberg, Haenertsburg, Gladdeklipkop, Chuniespoort, Zeekoegat, with Gompies Roedtan, and Marble Hall a bit further away.

About Pietersburg

Polokwane means  ‘place of safety’ in Northern Sotho. It falls under the Capricorn district municipality and Polokwane local municipality. Pietersburg has an airport. There are 3 townships around Polokwane; Westenburg , Seshego, Turfloop, Nirvana. Agricultural produce include tomatoes, citrus fruit, bananas and avocado. Polokwane has 2 Sports stadiums; Peter Mokoba Stadium and Pietersburg Stadium and was host to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. There are 3 tersiary institutions;  Tshwane University of Technology campus, and UNISA satellite campus, as well as the University of Limpopo that is about 30 km east of Polokwane.

Pietersburg History

During the Anglo Boer War almpost 4000 women and children were held in the concentration camp at Pietersburg.

Attractions in and around Pietersburg

Bakone Malapa Northern Sotho Open Air Museum, crafts sold to tourist in traditional village setting. Within the complex are archeological sites with remains of copper and iron-smelting works as well as some examples of rock paintings. The Eesterling Monuments are sites where the first gold crushing took place and where the first gold power plant  was in this area. The Irish house is one of the many historic buildings in Polokwane and there are some old churches, Nelson Mandela Statue, and other buildings worth a visit.

Check out Polokwane Bird and Reptile Park, Polokwane Game Reserve, Moletzie Bird Sanctuary, and  Modjadji Rain Forest near Duiwelskloof that has the largest collection of indigenous cycads in South Africa,  Cheunie Crocodile Farm.

For the shop-a-holics there are 3 shopping malls;  Limpopo Mall, Savannah Mall, and Mall of the North – with cinemas and shops galore so you can shop till you drop. Meropa Casino (Jembe Tavern) are some other attractions.

Polokwane Gholf Course for golfing enthusiasts an the Peter Mokaba Sport Complex for soccer and other sport fans.
