About Namibia

There are many Game Reserves and Parks in Namibia. At first this seemed strange to me as most of Namibia is desert or semi-desert and one would not expect animals to be able to survive here. However, the desert is home to a myriad creatures and plants that have adapted brilliantly to their hot, dry environment in unique and marvelous ways. Two hundred and four species of vertebrate, including 121 reptiles, five types of frog, 44 bird species and 34 different mammals, live in the deserts of Southern Africa.

The main routes connecting the bigger cities are tarred, the rest are dirt roads.  Most of the dirt roads we traveled on were in very good nick.  My little Honda Jazz traversed them with ease.  It may however be more of a challenge for low-slung sport-cars.

It is a land of great beauty and contrasts, wide open spaces and thundering silence.

Main attractions in Namibia

Some of the highlights are the Etosha National Park, Kolmanskop and Luderitz, Hardap Dam, Sossusvlei, the Fish River Canyon, Hoba Meteorite site, the Skeleton Coast, Kalahari desert, and the Kaokoland.

National Parks, Recreational Parks, and Game Parks in Namibia

Kaudom Game Park, Caprivi Game Park, Muduma National Park, and Mamili National Park in the far north eastern horn of Namibia. The Skeleton Coast and Namib Naukluft Park on the Atlantic western coast. Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon lie in the Namib (desert) Naukluft Park.  The Richterveld National Park spans the South African – Namibian border into the Fish River Canyon. The Hardap Recreational Area is near Mariental and the Von Bach recreational Area is near Okahandja.  The Waterberg Plateau Park is not too far from Otjiwarongo. The Tsoabis Leopard Nature Park is near Otjimbingwe on your way to Usakos and Karibib in the Khomas Hochland.

Capital of Namibia

The capital is Windhoek.  Other big cities to not so large towns are Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Keetmanshoop, Oshakati, Tsumeb, Luderitz, Gobabis, in no special order.
