About Kakamas

Kakamas falls under the Siyanda district municipality and !Kai Gariep local municipality. Kakamas has an airport for smaller planes.

Kakamas History

It used to be known as Bassonsdrift;  at a place where the Orange River could be crossed more easily than at other places. Kakamas originated as a result of the Dutch Reformed Church where people congregated.

T’Kakemas means ‘place of the raging cow’, Gagamas is the name fr the ‘brown earth’ that women used to put on their faces, and kakamas is a korana word for ‘poor pasture’.  Your guess is as good as mine as to where the name of the town originated.

Water canals were built in an ingenious way and the locals built a hydro-electric system that produces more electricity than the town presently needs.

Attractions in and around Kakamas

Taste the nectar of the gods at Orange River Wineries. Delectable Cabernets, Shirazes, Chardonays, Chenin Blancs and sparkling wines to choose from. The raisins, dates, dried fruit, and export grapes are the main agricultural products with plantations of pecans, citrus and peaches vie-ing for attention.

Historic waterwheels  [bakkiespompe] still lift water a few meters in the canals ( few of them are still operational).

Kakamas CSM klipwinkel (shop) sells beautiful semi precious stones and other gorgeous jewellery.
Tha famous Augrabies Waterfall in the Augrabies Falls National Park is quite close.

Wonderwerk Cave, that has been inhabited for more than a million years, with cave art is near Kathu.
