Keimoes lies between Upington and Britstown on the N14 and falls under the ZF Mgcawu district municipality and Kai !Garib local municipality. Keimoes does not have an airport, the closes airport is at Kakemas for smaller aircraft and Upington for larger airplanes.
Keimoes is situated about 40km west from Upington, and no one is quite sure where the name of ‘big eye’ derives from as the only fountain is close to the Roman Catholic Missions Station, and it isn’t that large at all, but maybe in a land of drought it is better than nothing. On the other hand it might mean that you can see forever (from the top of the Tierberg mountain).
One gets a panoramic view, like a patchwork quilt, of farmlands in the Keimoes and Neilerdrift area from Tierberg ‘tiger mountain’ situated about 2km south east of Keimoes. One also gets a view of the islands in the Orange River (120), of which most are inhabited. In winter the aloes and ‘kokerbome’ cover the veld with all shades of yellow through red pointy flowers that look like rockets ready to launch .
Keimoes has a temperate climate. Summer temperatures range between 18 – 43 degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures can go as low as 0, but usually ranges between 3 – 23 degrees Celsius. The little rain that falls, usually does so in Spring (Sep/Oct), and is about 150-200mm annually. Some rainfall may occur at the back-end of Summer (Feb/Apr).
The name Keimoes aparently means spring or fountain.
The R.C. Mission Mill started at R.K. Sending in Keimoes Main Road . It has been in use since then, automated and zooped-up in the meantime to meet modern standards. Even with modernization the process is still work-intensive and provides many jobs to produce the white and brown flour.

Kalahari Water is a private eco-tourist development on a wine farm about 4 km from Keimoes. It is a very interesting phenomenon where desert and water oasis lie cheek by jowl, with much to see and do.
There are some etchings in rock that look like dinosaurs that are causing a bit of a furore at the moment. Man is supposed to be too young to have been witness to dinosaurs, so who or what could have made these ‘drawings’?
