Olifantshoek is an Afrikaans name that means ‘Elephant Corner’ and falls under the Johan Taolo Gaetsewe district municipality and Gamagara local municipality. It lies at the base of the Langeberge on the Namakwari route on the N14 national road. You will find Olifantshoek south east from Upington, northeast from Kuruman and northwest from Kathu. Olifantshoek has an airport for smaller aircraft.
Olifantshoek used to be part of the Tsantsabane municipality before it amalgamated with the Gamagara municipality in 2006. It used to be known as the ‘portal to the growling sand’ before the town got its name Olifantshoek.
The Batlhaping and Batlharo Tswana bantustans lived in this area, and before that, the bushmen. They have left their mark on many caves and rocks in this area.
Attractions in and around Olifantshoek
In town there is the old NG-church on the main road. Just outside town is a garden with a statue of an elephant, made by Louis Gay, the town’s mascot and guardian angel. Sishen is a mining town close by with one of the biggest open cast mines in the world. The Galeshewe war graves are just outside Olifantshoek on the Fuller Farm.
The Witsand Nature Reserve is a wonderful place to visit with lots of trees and grassland. In a dry year one can hear the rumblings of the huge sanddunes. In Afrikaans it is called ‘brulsand’ which means ‘growling sand’ because of the sound the sand makes.
There are many game viewing opportunities, hunting safaris, and 4×4 routes in this area.
If you are interested in Archeology, this area is mesmerising with San rock paintings and markings, some of which are at Meerlust and ‘Pan Heuwel’. There are glacier striations and cave art near Kathu, and Wonderwerk Cave, that has been inhabited for over a million years, is in the vicinity.
The Neylan and Pudu hiking trails are for the more energetic visitors.
