Hermanus lies alongWalker Bay on the South Coast of the Cape, on the Indian Ocean side. It is well-known for its whale watching season when people come from all over the world to watch these gentle giants frolick in the water the festival is usually in October, but the whales sometimes arrive as early as June, and stay till December. There is a kalfiefees (calf festival) to welcome the newborn calves in August before the main festival). You often see them in False Bay and in Simonstown too. We have even spotted a few off Kommetjie.
Hermanus falls under the City of Cape Town Municipality.
Originally called Hermanuspietersfontein and later shortened to Hermanus.
Attractions in and around Hermanus
The Old Harbour Museum, DeWetshuis Photo Museum, Whale House, Hermanus Magnetic Observatory (Monitors the earth’s magnetic field). Hermanus Gholf Club, Hermanus Yacht Club, quaint old fishermen cottages, Windsor Hotel, Marine Hotel, the old harbour.
Grotto beach is the largest beach in the erea. Other beaches to visit in the area are Voelklip, Kammabaai, Vermont, Sandbaai, Onrus, Langbaai, Hawston, Kleinmond, Fisherhaven.
There are many walks and hikes. Take a scenic drive up the old Rotary way (track) onto the mountain, Fernkloof Nature Reserve, Hoy’s koppie; a rocky outcrop in the middle of town, or traverse the cliff paths that trace the coastline. Community guides are available to give you specialized guided tours (contact the tourism offices). Township tours are also available.
For the adventurous there is lots to do; Watersports, kayaking, sailing, boating, diving, fishing, fly-fishing, Shark cage diving, deep-sea-fishing. Horse-riding, quad bike trails, cycling, mountain biking, forest adventures and other extreme sports.
Shoppers have much to choose from at the malls, shopping complexes, the CBD shops, and informal stalls and markets. There are restaurants, fast food joints, pubs, and other watering holes for the hungry and thirsty.
Whale watching (between July and December) from the shore or take a whale watching cruise or two.
Craft and Farmers Markets
There is a daily craft market at the Market Square above the harbor. Other markets in the area Hermanuspietersfontein wine cellar in the Hemel-en-aarde Village, there is Lemm’s corner market, and Onrus market on the first Saturday of each month. Further afield – Stanford has a meander where you can taste and buy cheeses, olives and other goodies at the various venues.

Whale Festivals between August and October – see the events calendar in ‘What’s on‘
Hermanus Adventure week coincides with the Whale Festival with sporting events, mountain Bike races, marathons, open water swim events, etc. The Kalfiefees (‘Calf Festival’) takes place before the main whale festival, usually around Women’s Day in August. This festival is a performing arts festival with live theatre, dance, music gigs and literary events, obviously with the accompanying arts, crafts, and food stalls.
